What kind of stone floors do you restore?
We work with all the natural stone floors commonly found in homes and commercial properties across Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and South West London.
Each stone type is different, with its own porosity, hardness and surface characteristics, and the restoration process is tailored to suit the floor in front of us. Here is a quick guide to the surfaces we restore most often.
Limestone
Limestone is a warm, matte-finish stone that dulls and scratches with regular use. Foot traffic gradually takes the surface flat, and household cleaning products can etch the surface if they are too acidic. Restoration brings the tone back and, where the surface has gone rough or pitted, we can return it to a smooth, consistent finish before applying a sealer to protect it going forward.
Marble
Marble is one of the most rewarding stones to restore. Even a heavily worn or etched marble floor can come back with real depth and clarity once the surface is worked back and polished up. Scratches, watermarks and the general dulling that comes with years of footfall all respond well to the process. The finished result can be striking. We can bring marble back to a high polish or keep it softer and more matte, depending on what suits the room.
Granite
Granite is a hard-wearing stone that holds up well over time, but it still dulls and loses its surface sheen with heavy use. Restoration typically involves cleaning the surface thoroughly, polishing out surface marks, and resealing to restore the stone’s natural depth and resistance. Granite is also well suited to high-traffic commercial settings, where a properly sealed surface is far easier to maintain day to day.
Terrazzo
Terrazzo floors are made up of chips of marble, glass or stone set in a binder and ground flat, which means they can be scratched, stained and worn in the same way as natural stone. Restoration involves grinding and polishing the surface back to an even, consistent finish. Old terrazzo floors, in particular, often come up beautifully once the surface layers are removed and the original material beneath is exposed.
Travertine
Travertine has a naturally porous surface with small holes and channels that can trap dirt and debris over time. Restoration cleans the surface thoroughly, repairs or fills surface voids where appropriate, and applies a sealer that makes the floor far easier to look after. Travertine can be brought back to a polished or a honed finish depending on your preference and how the space is used.
Slate
Slate is a tough, layered stone that often just needs a thorough deep clean and a coat of sealer to come back to life. Where the surface has become rough, faded or stripped of its natural oils, we can clean it back, treat the surface, and apply a finish that brings out the stone’s natural dark tones and texture. Slate responds particularly well to regular maintenance once it has been properly sealed.
