Free site visit, fixed-price quote.

Travertine is one of the warmest and most characterful natural stones used in UK floors — a form of limestone formed by mineral springs, with naturally occurring surface holes that are part of the stone’s signature look. Properly refilled, cleaned, and finished with a colour-enhancing sealer, travertine reveals the cream, gold and honey tones that made it such a popular choice in the first place. The transformation is often dramatic.

We restore travertine floors across Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and South West London — domestic and commercial, filled-and-honed, polished, or unfilled rustic finishes. Our process refills missing holes, deep cleans the surface, addresses wear with diamond honing where needed, and finishes with a colour-enhancing impregnating sealer that brings out the warm tones travertine is known for.

We work on all common travertine finishes used in UK properties — filled-and-honed (the most common domestic finish), filled-and-polished (rarer but striking), tumbled (rustic with open holes left unfilled), and brushed/chiselled.

Each behaves differently in cleaning and sealing.

Identifying the original finish during the site visit tells us how to restore it properly.

Hole filling done properly

The single biggest part of travertine restoration is refilling open holes where the factory filler has shrunk or fallen out. We refill them with colour-matched resin or cement filler (matching the original) and blend each repair flush with the surrounding finish. Done properly, the repairs are invisible — and the floor reads as one consistent surface again.

Etch removal and re-honing

Travertine responds beautifully to professional honing, which removes etching and surface wear and resets the finish. Where etching is present, we use diamond pads to take the affected layer back and bring the surface to your chosen finish — typically a smooth, soft satin sheen that suits travertine’s natural character.

Colour-enhancing impregnating sealer

Travertine has warm, golden, brown and cream tones that look spectacular when properly enhanced. Colour-enhancing impregnating sealers penetrate into the stone and bring out the natural colour without leaving a topical film. This is one of the genuine differences between an OK travertine restoration and a great one.

Filled, unfilled or polished

Travertine is sold in three main finishes: filled-and-honed (most domestic floors), filled-and-polished (less common in UK installations but stunning), and unfilled or ‘tumbled’ (rustic, with the holes left open). We work on all three. Each takes a different cleaning and sealing approach.

Strip old sealers first

Most tired travertine has been re-sealed multiple times with whatever was to hand — household waxes, supermarket polishes, low-grade acrylic sealers. We strip all of that off mechanically and chemically before the new finish goes on. The result is a finish that bonds to clean stone and lasts for years.

How We Restore Travertine Floors

Most travertine restorations centre on hole refilling, deep cleaning, and resealing — full mechanical refurbishment is needed where there’s etching or significant wear, but many floors don’t require it.

Site visit, finish assessment, fixed-price quote

We identify the travertine finish (filled-honed, filled-polished, or unfilled), assess hole loss and any etching, check for stained or damaged tiles, and discuss the sealer that suits the floor. You see test patches where useful and get a written, fixed-price quote.

Strip the old finish and deep clean

We remove old wax, polish, failed sealers and ingrained dirt using specialist strippers and rotary scrubbing equipment. Wet vacuum extraction lifts the slurry off the floor cleanly. The surface is rinsed and neutralised, ready for repair and refinishing. Grout lines are cleaned separately with stiff brushes.

Refill missing holes and address etching

We refill open holes with colour-matched resin or cement filler (matching the original system), blending each fill flush with the surrounding stone. Where etching or wear needs honing out, we use diamond pads at appropriate grits to bring the surface back to the chosen finish — the texture and character of the travertine is preserved.

Colour-enhancing impregnating seal and aftercare

We apply a colour-enhancing impregnating sealer that penetrates the stone and brings out its natural warm tones — typically two coats minimum, with absorption testing between each. You get a written aftercare guide covering pH-neutral cleaning, what to avoid (vinegar, citrus, generic kitchen sprays), and a realistic resealing schedule (typically every two to four years for sealed travertine).

What affects the price?

Travertine restoration is quoted as a fixed price after a free site visit. Cost varies based on how much hole refilling is needed, how much etching has to be honed out, and the size and access of the area. Factors that affect the quote:

Hole refilling required

Some floors need only a few holes refilled; others have lost most of the original filler and need the entire floor refilled. This is the single biggest variable on travertine quotes.

Etching and wear

Lightly dulled travertine needs only deep cleaning and resealing. Travertine with significant etching needs diamond honing — typically more time and more polishing stages.

Existing sealer

Floors with thick, failed sealers or multiple layers of household wax take longer to strip than lightly-finished travertine. The strip stage often takes more time than people expect.

Total area and access

Open kitchens are quicker per square metre than tight bathrooms, hallways, or layouts with built-in furniture and appliances to work around.

Sealer choice

Standard impregnating sealers are included in the quote. Colour-enhancing sealers are typically a small upgrade — and on most travertine, they’re worth it for the depth of finish. The site visit is free and there’s no obligation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Travertine Floor Restoration

Why are there holes appearing in my travertine?

Travertine naturally has holes — they’re a feature of the stone, formed during its geological creation. Most travertine sold for floors is ‘filled’ at the factory with resin or cement, but those fillers shrink, weather and pop out over time, especially in heavily-trafficked areas. Refilling the missing holes with colour-matched filler is one of the standard parts of a travertine restoration.

Can etch marks be removed from travertine?

Yes — etching is a chemical reaction with the calcium carbonate in the stone, leaving dull marks where acidic substances have touched the surface. Etching can be honed out: diamond pads remove the affected layer and the surface is brought back to your chosen finish. Light etching is straightforward; heavy etching needs more passes.

Should travertine be polished or honed?

Most UK travertine floors are filled-and-honed — a soft satin finish that suits the stone and hides daily wear better than a polished surface would. Filled-and-polished travertine looks stunning in formal settings but is less forgiving day-to-day. Tumbled travertine (with the holes left open) is a deliberate rustic choice. We’ll discuss which finish suits your situation.

How often does travertine need resealing?

Most domestic travertine benefits from resealing every two to four years, depending on traffic and how it’s cleaned. Bathrooms and wet rooms typically need it more often than dry living spaces. The water-drop test is a good guide: if water beads on the surface, the seal is still working; if it soaks in within a minute or two, it’s time to reseal. We’ll set realistic expectations in your aftercare guide.

Will the work be messy or disruptive?

We work as cleanly as possible. Our machines use high-extraction vacuum systems to keep airborne dust to a minimum during dry stages, and wet-process stages are contained and cleaned up on site.
